So far all I can find are these recent Petraeus interview highlights from some right wing blog:
Highlights:
the surge focused on the security of Iraqis (rather than just killing the enemy). “The only way to secure a population is the live with it; you cannot commute to this fight.”
Petraeus said Barack Obama acknowledged that things in Iraq have very much improved since the start of the surge
Petraeus reiterated that conditions and the situation on the ground in Iraq should be the driving force behind reduction in troops
I'll keep looking, but I think McCain might've just thrown a talking point at us last night, one that should have been challenged if it's not true.
I was pretty drunk, and McCain kept throwing out a pile of garbage that Obama couldn't cover all the "points." Most of McCain's points came from the right wing blogs and gasbags. That's who he was trying to impress. But I think petey tried to push that idea once, that Petreus thought Obama's plan would make them lose. It was, of course, a lie.
Well, it was a lie he told twice and I felt it like a kickball in the face both times. I immediately wanted to know if that was true, but BO chuckled it off.
I didn't think about it at the time, but last night was prolly the first time a whole lot of Mur'cans heard Obama speak out loud.
Pat Buchanan had a great analogy afterwards. It was a boxing match, McCain crowded Obama the whole time landing body blows, and all Obama could do was bear it and counter punch when he could.
That feels pretty much like what I saw last night. Obama should've given McCain a big shove, clear some space, and go on the offensive. He didn't. Instead Obama fought like Cary Fucking Grant in a tuxedo.
But that's okay. He showed the masses that he's not a nappy-headed uppity negro. I think a lot of people prolly breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe they were expecting Sharpton.
And they're prolly thinking, "You know, the kids seem really hyped about this, so maybe if I don't vote for McCain and this guy won it wouldn't be such a bad thing. Plus Obama really sounds like he's talking about ME and MY life. Besides, one less bullshit errand on that Tuesday."
I know, it's not exactly a scene from The West Wing, but it's true.
You know, I'm with Anonny at TLC that Obama's not playing it like a boxing match, he's playing to win a campaign. His whole concept is that we need to find the areas where we agree, and work out where we need to go from there. It's risky, but to pull it off, he has to be in that mode consistently. He was, and it worked.
And he knows he's got most of the left; what they both need is the independents. I watched the replay on CNN, and watched the guage of indies rise a lot more and higher for Obama when he was speaking, and it dipped when McCain flailed and snarled. Right after the debate, my friend, the godbot from work called to say she was surprised how much she liked Obama. This is the one that ripped me a new one for saying Palin was a liar! The thing is, before we left work, I joked that my drinking words would be "my friends." She lashed back with "mine is when Obama goes uh uh uh" and she pretended to be retarded as she said "uh." Pretty dang ugly, but I just said, "so, does Obama have to do that head thing, or is it just when he says uh?"
It made her ashamed of being so mean, instead of defensive about it, and it worked. And it made her more apt to look at Obama less cynically. So when she called after, she admitted that he was presidential looking. Baby steps, but progress nonetheless.

BTW: the second highlight above disproves McOld's insistence last night that Obama STILL refuses to acknowledge the surge did any good.
